BlackBerry shipped just 2.7 million BB 10 handsets last quarter (updated)

Blackberry shipped just 27 million BB 10 handsets last quarter updated

BlackBerry got off to a roaring start with with the Z10, which shipped a million devices in its first three weeks on the market and led many to predict there'd be at least 3 million shipped this quarter (the first full quarter of Z10 availability). That turned out not to be the case, as the company said during an earnings call for Q1 2014 that it managed to get just 2.7 million BlackBerry 10 OS handsets out the door, despite the Q10 having joined the Z10 on shelves for a good part of that period. Those figures make up just 40 percent of its handset numbers, meaning most of the 6.8 million phones it shipped consisted of cheaper last-gen products. They refused to break those numbers down between the Q10 and Z10, so that's all we have to go on at this point -- but taken with its announcement of an $84 million loss, it's far from encouraging.

Update: Apologies, folks. Our original headline said 2.7 million were sold, whereas in fact the figure indicates shipping numbers. The post itself is unchanged and accurate. For reference, BlackBerry's actual sales to end users lagged behind shipments by around 30 percent when they revealed the previous set of figures back in March.

Stocks jump on positive jobless data; one ear on Fed talkers

stocks

Stocks closed higher on Thursday, for a third-straight day, lifted by a string of upbeat economic reports and following several speeches from Federal Reserve policymakers suggesting the central bank has time before it starts reducing its bond-buying.

(Read More: US Economy Could Grow 5% in Late 2014: Fund Manager)

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rallied 114.35 points, to close at 15,024.49, boosted by Boeing and Hewlett-Packard, logging its first three-day rally since late April. The blue-chip index posted its 15th triple-digit move of the 19 trading sessions in June, the most in a month since October 2011.

The S&P 500 advanced 9.94 points, to finish at 1,613.20. And the Nasdaq jumped 25.64 points, to end at 3,401.86.

"If we consolidate during the next couple of sessions, the bulls need to hold the 1,600 line or this inverse head and shoulders formation will be negated," wrote Elliot Spar, market strategist at Stifel Nicolaus.

The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, ended below 17.

Most key S&P sectors finished in positive territory, led by financials and consumer discretionary, while materials dipped.

Upbeat economic data from China also helped bolster sentiment. Industrial profits unexpectedly rose 15 percent in May year-on-year, defying expectations of a slowdown. Japan's Nikkei rallied nearly 3 percent, logging its biggest percentage gain in 13 sessions, while the Shanghai Composite Index finished flat.

"Any China data carries significant weight these days as investors are desperate for signs that the world's second biggest economy is still ticking along," wrote Stan Shamu, market strategist at IG.

On the economic front, weekly jobless claims fell 9,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 346,000, according to the Labor Department, largely in line with expectations. The four-week moving average for new claims fell 2,750 to 345,750. And consumer spending rebounded 0.3 percent in May, matching estimates, after a revised 0.3 percent decline in the prior month, according to the Commerce Department.

"I think it makes the Fed even more confident that they're doing the right thing," said Drew Matus, senior U.S. economist and managing director at UBS. "And if you look at these numbers, they suggest that the second quarter's going to be better than the first quarter."

And pending home sales for May soared 6 percent to hit a six-year high, according to the National Association of Realtors.

New York Fed president William Dudley said the central bank's asset purchases would be more aggressive than the timeline Chairman Ben Bernanke outlined last week if economic growth and the labor market turn out weaker than expected.

Dudley added that the recent market forecasts for an earlier rate gain are "quite out of sync" with the statements and expectations of the policy-making Federal Open Market Committee. Dudley is a voting member of the FOMC.

Fed Board Governor Jerome Powell agreed that markets over-reacted to the central bank's statements on tapering.

"Market adjustments since May have been larger than would be justified by any reasonable reassessment of the path of policy," Powell said in a speech. "To the extent the market is pricing in an increase in the federal funds rate in 2014, that implies a stronger economic performance than is forecast either by most FOMC participants or by private forecasters."

Atlanta Federal Reserve Bank President Dennis Lockhart, meanwhile, said the U.S. economy's path will determine the fate of the central bank's bond buying, but it would be appropriate to pull back a bit if the economy performs as expected.

"There is no 'predetermined' pace of reductions in the asset purchases, nor is the stopping point fixed," Lockhart said in remarks prepared for delivery to the Kiwanis Club of Marietta. "The pace of purchases, the composition of purchases and the ultimate size of the Fed's balance sheet still depend on how economic conditions evolve."

Markets have been fixated on Fed commentary this week, after Bernanke said last week that the central bank could begin to wind down its $85 billion monthly bond purchases before the end of the year. That sent already rising yields higher and sent stocks on a roller-coaster ride.

Treasury prices extended their gains as yields tumbled to session lows following the data and after the auction of $29 billion in seven-year notes saw healthy demand.

Twitter wants to make a 'DVR mode' for live TV events, offer delayed Twitter streams

Social media is very much about keeping up with what's happening right now -- but not everybody consumes live media simultaneously. What happens when you watch a time-shifted sporting event four hours late, but still want to see what your peers had to say in the heat of the moment? Twitter CEO Dick Costolo has an idea: social media DVR. Speaking at a moderated panel at at the Center for Technology Innovation, Costolo envisioned a system that would allow users to jump back in time and look at a snapshot of the social network at a specific moment.

"It would be nice to see things like a graphic of spikes in the conversation," he said. "And be able to scroll back to that time and see what happened at that particular moment." The CEO continued to suggest that such a feature could be designed around planned events, describing it as "Twitter in a DVR mode." Although it was suggested that these features are in testing, Costolo stopped short of saying if they were actually something users could expect to see soon. Naturally, we reached out to the company for further comment, but haven't heard back just yet. Still, it's at least clear that the company hasn't abandoned its television-based ambitions.

The FDA Has Shuttered 1,677 Illegal Prescription Drugs Websites

The FDA Has Shuttered 1,677 Illegal Prescription Drugs Websites

We've all seen those pop-up ads peddling discount prescription drugs from Canadian pharmacies. Ohhhh! Cheap Xanax! They always seem a little dubious, but as of this week, you're probably going to see fewer of them. In partnership with international regulatory and law enforcement agencies, the FDA has just shut down 1,677 illegal online pharmacies, and seized a whopping $41,104,386 worth of illegal drugs.

A lot of these websites looked legal from the outside?many claimed to be Canadian pharmacies offering "brand name" or "FDA-approved" drugs. They would show fake licences and certifications so U.S. buyers would think they were okay, when in reality, many of these sites were pushing fake 'scrips. Seized sites have been marked very clearly with a banner identifying them as illegal, like the one seen above. Any doubts you ever had that a URL like c-v-s-pharmacy dot com was legit can be put to rest. [FDA]

Swell Launches A Personalized App For News Radio Listening

Swell_iPhone_pairSwell, a smartphone app launching today, is quickly becoming my favorite way to listen to spoken-word content. There are other apps focusing on that kind of content ? for example, when we wrote about Stitcher's growth last year, we said it was starting to sound like "the Pandora of talk radio." Stitcher, however, actually follows more of an on-demand model ? you choose what you want to listen to (although there are also content recommendations). Swell, on the other hand, is closer to the Pandora experience, where you just open the app, hit play, and interesting content should immediately start streaming.

Santorum: Rubio?s support of immigration bill could hurt presidential prospects

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who is quietly laying the groundwork for another presidential run, said on Wednesday that Republican presidential hopefuls who support the federal immigration overhaul will struggle to find support among the party's primary voters in 2016.

During an interview on the Andrea Tantaros radio show, Santorum said lawmakers like Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio, a lead author of the Senate bipartisan immigration bill, would suffer "consequences" for supporting the bill if they choose to run for president.

"The issue of immigration and respecting the rule of law in this country is a very important thing for Republican voters across the country. The idea that there are Republicans in Washington, D.C., who are going to say, 'Well, the rule of law isn't that important, the idea of people coming into this country have done so illegally and we're going to basically treat them the same as people who came here legally,' is just not going to go over well in a Republican primary," Santorum said when asked specifically if Rubio's support for an immigration overhaul would hurt his chances in 2016. "I think there's going to be certainly consequences for folks who don't understand the importance of the respect for the rule of law that Republicans have."

Conservatives have criticized Rubio for his work on the immigration bill, which offers a pathway to legality for immigrants living in the country unlawfully. Rubio said on Tuesday that he plans to announce a decision on a presidential run in 2014.

When Santorum first ran for president in 2012, he won the popular vote in 11 primary and caucus elections. Although he conceded the race to Mitt Romney in April 2012, Santorum has continued to advocate for his ideas through a nonprofit group and give speeches in Iowa regularly. Santorum announced last week that he has joined EchoLight Studios, an entertainment company that produces faith-based films, as CEO.

In the interview with Tantaros, Santorum said he was "very open" to running for president again.

"The position I've taken here at this movie studio, EchoLight, has not in any way changed my thinking on running again in 2016. I'm very open to that. I think that, in fact, that some of the work that I'm doing at the movie studio is actually in concert with that," he said. "I think this is probably a good way to spend my time and energy potentially between two runs."

Santorum even took an early jab at possible Democratic presidential contender Hillary Clinton when asked about her handling of the attack on an American compound in Benghazi, Libya, while she was secretary of state.

"I don't think she's the right candidate for the country, and I'm hopeful that if you look at her entire record, that it precludes her," Santorum said.

Cat Alerts Family As Ash Triggers House Fire | Stuff.co.nz

TERRI RUSSELL AND NEIL RATLEY Southland fire

NICOLE GOURLEY/Fairfax NZ

BIG MESS: The kitchen of an Invercargill house that was badly damaged in a house fire yesterday

A cat jumping on the bed of an Invercargill man may have saved his family's life when a fire destroyed part of their Maitland St home yesterday.

George Clarke said he woke when the family cat jumped on his bed about 3am, before smelling smoke and realising something was wrong.

After seeing the flames engulfing the back of the house, he rushed to get his partner, Stephanie Fitzgerald, and their son Aaron Clarke, 17, outside.

Neighbour Erika Horsham, 17, said she saw a flicker of flames through her curtains, accompanied by loud screams and the ring of the door bell.

She woke her parents who called the fire service and welcomed the family into their home.

Before finishing a cup of tea, George Clarke was taken to Southland Hospital with smoke inhalation.

He was discharged about 11am yesterday and returned to the home. There was no sign of the cat, which had probably made itself scarce, he said.

"They told me to buy a Lotto ticket. Got to look at the bright side, the damage is done and there's nothing we can do about it."

Invercargill senior station officer Alan Goldsworthy said the smoke initially made it difficult for firefighters to establish which house was on fire.

The rear of the house was well alight and the fire had spread into the roof area before quickly spreading through the rest of the property.

The house was extensively damaged, he said.

"About 50 per cent of the house was damaged by fire and the entire property suffered heavy smoke and water damage."

The cause of the fire was believed to be hot ashes which were disposed of in a carport. The ashes ignited and the flames spread to the house, he said.

Ashes should be disposed of into a metal container with a close-fitting lid, he said.

"The tins should be stored away from other combustible items and people should be aware ashes can stay hot for up to five days after being emptied."

World stocks fall amid China credit concerns

LONDON (AP) ? Global stock markets reeled Monday amid concerns that credit conditions will tighten in the U.S. and China, the world's two largest economies.

Shanghai's stock index endured its biggest loss in four years after the country's central bank allowed commercial rates to spike higher. Analysts say the move was part of an effort to curb the high level of off-balance-sheet lending in China that could threaten the country's financial stability.

But the higher lending rates could also hurt economic growth. The impact for stock markets would be all the greater if the U.S. Federal Reserve tightens its own ultra-loose monetary policy over the coming months, as it has signaled it would do so long as the U.S. economy improves according to its forecasts.

Mainland China's Shanghai Composite Index plummeted 5 percent to 1,968.51 while the smaller Shenzhen Composite Index plunged 6.1 percent to 881.87.

In Europe, Britain's FTSE 100 fell 1.2 percent to 6,040.44 and France's CAC-40 slid 1.6 percent to 3,599.05. Germany's DAX was down 0.9 percent to 7,717.43 even though a key business sentiment index rose slightly, suggesting the recovery in Europe's largest economy continues, though at a slow pace.

Wall Street opened lower, with the Dow Jones industrial down 1.6 percent to 14,563.29 and the S&P 500 down 1.7 percent to 1,564.91.

Government bond yields rose in the U.S. and other big economies on expectations that borrowing rates would not remain at their current lows for much longer. The U.S. 10-year rate traded above 2.6 percent for the first time since August 2011.

Bond yields also rose in Europe's financially shaky countries, suggesting investors are relatively more cautious about lending them money despite the good returns they provide. Spain's 10-year bond yield was above 5 percent for the first time in three months.

Analysts at Moody's Investors Service said they saw the Chinese central bank's action to allow lending rates to rise as "a conscious decision" to curb credit growth.

Moody's added that a prolonged credit crunch could threaten Chinese companies, "especially those in the private sector with weak credit quality, because it heightens the risk that banks will scale back lending to those companies." Moody's says that China's central government finances remain strong, but that rapid credit growth and liabilities at the local level pose a threat to growth.

Andrew Sullivan of Kim Eng Securities in Hong Kong said China's new leaders want credit to be available to keep the economy moving but not so much as to promote asset bubbles.

"After six months in power, the new leadership is putting its policies in place. It's signaling that credit is going to remain tight," Sullivan said. "All that is in line with moving China from being an export driven economy to being a domestic consumption economy."

The concerns over China's credit market were magnified by existing worries that access to money will tighten in the world's largest economy, the U.S.

Investors are concerned what will happen as the U.S. Federal Reserve slows down its monetary stimulus program, which has been pumping $85 billion into the financial system every month and helped many stock indexes reach multiyear or record highs. Markets tumbled last week when Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke said the program would likely slow down this year and end in 2014.

Elsewhere in Asia, Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 2.2 percent to 19,813.98. Japan's Nikkei 225 index, the regional heavyweight, fell 1.3 percent to 13,062.78. South Korea's Kospi lost 1.3 percent to 1,799.01. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 shed 1.5 percent at 4,666.50.

In energy markets, benchmark oil contract for August delivery was up 8 cents to $93.77 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $1.71 to close at $93.69 on Friday.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.3091 from $1.3139 late Friday in New York. The dollar fell to 97.33 yen from 97.76 yen.

High court sends back Texas race-based plan

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Supreme Court has sent a Texas case on race-based college admissions back to a lower court for another look.

The court's 7-1 decision Monday leaves unsettled many of the basic questions about the continued use of race as a factor in college admissions.

Justice Anthony Kennedy, writing for the court, says a federal appeals court needs to subject the University of Texas admission plan to the highest level of judicial scrutiny.

The Best Mad Men Season Yet

Megan Draper (Jessica Pare) and Don Draper (Jon Hamm). Megan Draper (Jessica Pare) and Don Draper (Jon Hamm)

Mindful of the recent ?sick day? on which Don Draper drunkenly slouched through a viewing of a Nixon ad, I approached last night?s episode of Mad Men half-expecting the season finale to be powered by at least a bit of electoral energy. Converting this half-expectation into an active wish, I began planning to compare and contrast the misadventures of Draper and crew with the mistakes registered by George Roundy, the hairdresser played by Warren Beatty in our country?s great bedroom farce, Shampoo, set on Election Day 1968, and ending on a cliff above the frontier of the promised land. I realized it ought to be easy to generate a spark of an idea about ambition, masculinity, and the American dream in the friction between the two productions. But I hadn?t yet realized what I?d already felt, that Mad Men has stopped being a period piece.

Among the signs of artistic growth that mark the show?s sixth season as its best to date is that it is has stopped using the past as a crutch to prop up its scenarios. In its first season, when the calendar paged across the second Tuesday in November of 1960, the producers wrought much ballyhoo. The agency had Nixon as a client; thus, according to the alternate rules of historical fiction, the audience had to credit Sterling Cooper with the real Nixon?s campaign slogan (?For the future?) and had to grin and bear a handful of instances of U.G.H. (unfortunately gratuitous historicism). I take its moments of jagged tonality to represent the cracks of a maturing voice, and its excesses as shrewd expressionistic choices. (Yes, it seemed rather much for the season opener to quote Dante?s Inferno by way of bearing down on Draper?s midlife crisis. But Don Draper is not having a midlife crisis. His life is the crisis, and it?s got momentum.) This season, less eager to please and more anxious to jar, Mad Men has moved its mimicry of then-current events farther back in the thematic mix. The tail end of the season breezes past the election to tumble toward the more emotionally momentous holiday of Thanksgiving.

The fate of the country is noted, significantly, by Draper, only when a man of God interrupts his drinking and his drinking career. ?I?m doing just fine,? was Don?s brush-off of the guy who may in fact have saved his soul. ?Nixon?s president, everything?s back where Jesus wants it.?

Think of it this way: Now that Mad Men has stopped attempting to be Updike?s Rabbit series, an analytic diorama, it has focused its self-consciously literary efforts on the more interesting business of being Updike?s Couples. American history is just a thing that happens, like the weather, and instead the personal past is the nightmare from which Draper?off the sauce and onto a mission of radical reinvention?may yet awake.

The show is pitching Draper?s epiphany as a program of radical transparency, enacted by a character known for his opacity and invisibility. I appreciated the elegance of the episode?s return to the season opener. There, Draper, creating a campaign for a hotel in Hawaii, produced a spooky-Zen print ad featuring an empty suit on a beach. Here, when the clients arrive for a meeting, his partners can?t find him. It is as if, embracing the idea of the ad, he has disappeared. Where to? The bar stool, where he?s doing just fine. Man, the crusty old symbolism of American masculinity had a rough week: Undone by cars and guns, trembling with delirium in the absence of alcohol and with fear in the face of adultery, the strong and silent majority of the ensemble did not do much to give patriarchy a good name.

Not for nothing does Draper?s come-to-Jesus moment?his outing of himself as an orphan, for the sake of his relationship with his kids?happen during a meeting with Hershey?s. ?The wrapper looked like what was inside,? he says early in the episode, a professional illusionist and existential imposter appreciating an honest fa?ade. He repeats the line later. Shortly, he takes his kids on a car ride to visit the house where he grew up. A kid eats an ice-cream treat on the stoop of the house, at the end of the finale, while Don begins to reconcile be and seem. Everything for a moment is back where Jesus wants it.

Obama to tout economic impact of immigration

(AP) ? President Barack Obama will convene a meeting of CEOs and business leaders to tout what the White House says are the economic benefits of a landmark immigration bill.

The afternoon meeting is scheduled just hours before the Senate holds a key test vote on a border security amendment. The measure could help the bill garner more Republican support.

Obama is expected to highlight new estimates about the bill's impact on the national deficit. The Congressional Budget Office says the bill would reduce the deficit by about $200 billion over the next 10 years and by about $700 billion over the following decade.

The bill would provide a pathway to citizenship for many of the 11 million people living in the U.S. illegally.

Snowden believed to be in Moscow

MOSCOW (AP) ? A former National Security Agency contractor wanted by the United States for revealing highly classified surveillance programs was believed to have landed in Russia on Sunday ? possibly as a stopover before traveling elsewhere ? after being allowed to leave Hong Kong.

Edward Snowden was on an Aeroflot flight from Hong Kong that arrived in Moscow on Sunday afternoon and was booked on a flight to fly to Cuba on Monday, the Russian news agencies ITAR-Tass and Interfax reported, citing unnamed airline officials. The reports said he intended to travel from Cuba to Caracas, Venezuela.

Snowden did not leave Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport with the other passengers. Interfax reported that he was spending the night in the transit zone of the airport because he did not have a visa to enter Russia and had rented a room in a capsule hotel.

Snowden had been in hiding in Hong Kong for several weeks after he revealed information on the highly classified spy programs. The WikiLeaks anti-secrecy group said it was working with him and he was bound for an unnamed "democratic nation via a safe route for the purpose of asylum."

The White House said President Barack Obama has been briefed on Sunday's developments by his national security advisers.

Snowden's departure came a day after the United States made a formal request for his extradition and gave a pointed warning to Hong Kong against delaying the process of returning him to face trial in the U.S.

The Department of Justice said only that it would "continue to discuss this matter with Hong Kong and pursue relevant law enforcement cooperation with other countries where Mr. Snowden may be attempting to travel."

The Hong Kong government said in a statement that Snowden left "on his own accord for a third country through a lawful and normal channel."

It acknowledged the U.S. extradition request, but said U.S. documentation did not "fully comply with the legal requirements under Hong Kong law." It said additional information was requested from Washington, but since the Hong Kong government "has yet to have sufficient information to process the request for provisional warrant of arrest, there is no legal basis to restrict Mr. Snowden from leaving Hong Kong."

The statement said Hong Kong had informed the U.S. of Snowden's departure. It added that it wanted more information about alleged hacking of computer systems in Hong Kong by U.S. government agencies which Snowden had revealed.

Hong Kong's decision to let Snowden go on a technicality appears to be a pragmatic move aimed at avoiding a drawn out extradition battle. The action swiftly eliminates a geopolitical headache that could have left Hong Kong facing pressure from both Washington and Beijing.

Hong Kong, a former British colony, has a high degree of autonomy and is granted rights and freedoms not seen on mainland China, but under the city's mini constitution Beijing is allowed to intervene in matters involving defense and diplomatic affairs.

Hong Kong has an extradition treaty with the U.S., but the document has some exceptions, including for crimes deemed political.

Russian officials have given no indication that they have any interest in detaining Snowden or any grounds to do so. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said that Russia would be willing to consider granting asylum if Snowden were to make such a request.

Russia and the United States have no extradition treaty that would oblige Russia to hand over a U.S. citizen at Washington's request.

WikiLeaks said it was providing legal help to Snowden at his request and that he was being escorted by diplomats and legal advisors from the group. WikiLeaks' founder, Julian Assange, who has spent a year inside the Ecuadorean Embassy in London to avoid extradition to Sweden to face questioning about sex crime allegations, told the Sydney Morning Herald that his organization is in a position to help because it has expertise in international asylum and extradition law.

The Cuban government had no comment on Snowden's movements or reports he might use Havana as a transit point.

In Ecuador, a high-ranking source at the presidency said there was no information about whether Snowden would seek asylum there. The source spoke on condition of anonymity for lack of authorization to speak on the issue.

Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino said last week that if Snowden asked for asylum, Ecuador would study the request.

The Obama administration on Saturday warned Hong Kong against delaying Snowden's extradition, with White House national security adviser Tom Donilon saying in an interview with CBS News, "Hong Kong has been a historically good partner of the United States in law enforcement matters, and we expect them to comply with the treaty in this case."

Michael Ratner, Assange's lawyer, said he didn't know Snowden's final destination, but that his options were not numerous. "You have to have a country that's going to stand up to the United States," Ratner said. "You're not talking about a huge range of countries here."

Ratner added that a country's extradition treaty with the U.S. is "not going to be relevant" because the country he ends up going to will likely be one willing to give him a political exemption.

Snowden's departure came as the South China Morning Post released new allegations from the former NSA contractor that U.S. hacking targets in China included the nation's cellphone companies and two universities hosting extensive Internet traffic hubs.

He told the newspaper that "the NSA does all kinds of things like hack Chinese cellphone companies to steal all of your SMS data." It added that Snowden said he had documents to support the hacking allegations, but the report did not identify the documents. It said he spoke to the newspaper in a June 12 interview.

With a population of more than 1.3 billion, China has massive cellphone companies. China Mobile is the world's largest mobile network carrier with 735 million subscribers, followed by China Unicom with 258 million users and China Telecom with 172 million users.

Snowden said Tsinghua University in Beijing and Chinese University in Hong Kong, home of some of the country's major Internet traffic hubs, were targets of extensive hacking by U.S. spies this year. He said the NSA was focusing on so-called "network backbones" in China, through which enormous amounts of Internet data passes.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said it was aware of the reports of Snowden's departure from Hong Kong to Moscow but did not know the specifics. It said the Chinese central government "always respects" Hong Kong's "handling of affairs in accordance with law." The Foreign Ministry also noted that it is "gravely concerned about the recently disclosed cyberattacks by relevant U.S. government agencies against China."

China's state-run media have used Snowden's allegations to poke back at Washington after the U.S. had spent the past several months pressuring China on its international spying operations.

A commentary published Sunday by the official Xinhua News Agency said Snowden's disclosures of U.S. spying activities in China have "put Washington in a really awkward situation."

"Washington should come clean about its record first. It owes ... an explanation to China and other countries it has allegedly spied on," it said. "It has to share with the world the range, extent and intent of its clandestine hacking programs."

Mobile Helix launches HTML5 platform - Computer Business Review

Duncan Macrae Published 21 June 2013

Mobile Helix, the enterprise application and data security platform provider, has launched Link, which it describes as the industry?s first pure HTML5 platform.

Link unlocks enterprise productivity by combining unparalleled security for enterprise data; a unique, open HTML5 application development and delivery platform; and breakthrough patent-pending performance enhancement technology.

Link is designed with data security rather than device security at its core, delivering unparalleled security irrespective of the endpoint. The technology bridges the fixed/mobile application divide by allowing any existing or new browser-based enterprise application to be deployed across multiple device types, including mobile devices, PCs and laptops. Link supports iOS and Android now, and will support Windows 8, Mac OSX and Blackberry 10 later this year.

Link embraces HTML5 and extends the standard to meet the most exacting set of enterprise requirements, including data security, device capability integration and performance optimization. HTML is the most commonly used development platform within enterprises, meaning companies using Link do not have to invest in any additional skills or infrastructure to enable secure mobility across their business.

Seth Hallem, CEO of Mobile Helix, said: "Link is designed with unrestricted enterprise productivity at its core. It is the first product on the market to combine the unmistakable benefits of device-independent applications built using HTML5, with a disruptive data security platform that ensures sensitive corporate data is safe on any device.

"We believe the notion that fixed and mobile applications require different development, delivery and security solutions is fundamentally flawed. Enterprises don't have the time or budget to simply throw out years of investment in standards-based IT and take a completely new, and often proprietary, approach to mobility. IT needs a unified strategy for building new apps and converting existing ones, while still ensuring data is protected under any circumstance and on any computing device. Link achieves this goal without requiring complicated and costly new infrastructure or expertise."

Link is constructed with optimised data security, rather than device security at its core. This is a fundamental shift in the enterprise security model that leverages unique features of both mobile operating systems and modern browser technology. The result is a more robust, yet simpler, security system than existing PC-based and mobile-device-based solutions. Link achieves this without placing any restrictions or limitations on the devices used. Even when devices are 'rooted' or 'jailbroken', Link ensures that corporate data is not at risk. Link includes a secure container on the device, fully device-independent encryption of all data in motion and at rest, a sophisticated key management architecture that ensures encrypted data remains safe, and a comprehensive policy engine that allows IT to enforce policies on applications and data rather than on devices.

Maribel Lopez, founder and principal analyst of Lopez Research, commented: "Contrary to popular opinion, mobile operating systems aren't necessarily less secure than PC operating systems. A tablet or smartphone with the right data security posture can be as, if not more, secure than a typical corporate laptop. PCs are perceived to be safe because of the numerous security 'band aids' that are applied to them, such as anti-virus, full-disk encryption, DLP and network access control."

Link creates a common application environment by deploying applications through Internet browsers, embracing standards-based technology to deliver an open, end-to-end solution. This, in turn, extends existing enterprise application development, delivery infrastructure and expertise to mobile devices. Link integrates with existing IT processes and infrastructure to enable a simplified 'download free' application delivery and support model, removing the need for a separate enterprise app store, app catalogue, and dedicated distribution and update processes for every different application and mobile operating system.

Lopez added: "For employees to be effective in their roles, critical enterprise data and applications must flow unrestricted across devices and networks. The power of mobility is clear, yet the enterprise mobility market today is crowded and confusing. Firms need mobile solutions that can integrate with existing enterprise infrastructure."

Heat Repeat Champions: Big Three Leads Miami to 2nd Straight NBA Title (VIDEO/PHOTOS)

MIAMI (AP) ? LeBron James will always remember his first championship. History will remember this one.

The way the Heat won ? or the way James wouldn't let them lose ? makes them one of the greats.

A Game 6 comeback when it appeared to be over, then a stirring Game 7 victory over a proud opponent cemented a place with the NBA's giants for this Miami team and its leader.

"Last year when I was sitting up here with my first championship, I said it was the toughest thing I had ever done," James said. "This year, I'll tell last year he's absolutely wrong. This was the toughest championship right here between the two."

And the San Antonio Spurs will always know it's a title they let slip away.

James scored 37 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in a 95-88 victory Thursday night in a tense game that was tight until Miami pulled away in the final minute.

Capping their best season in franchise history ? and perhaps the three-superstar system they used to build it ? the Heat ran off with the second straight thriller in the NBA's first championship series to go the distance since 2010.

Two nights after his Game 6 save when the Heat were almost eliminated, James continued his unparalleled run through the basketball world, with two titles and an Olympic gold medal in the last 12 months.

"I work on my game a lot throughout the offseason," said James, who was MVP for the second straight finals. "I put a lot of work into it and to be able to come out here and (have) the results happen out on the floor is the ultimate. The ultimate. I'm at a loss for words."

He made five 3-pointers, defended Tony Parker when he had to, and did everything else that could ever be expected from the best player in the game.

The Heat became the NBA's first repeat champions since the Lakers in 2009-10, and the first team to beat the Spurs in the NBA Finals.

"It took everything we had as a team," Dwyane Wade said. "Credit to the San Antonio Spurs, they're an unbelievable team, an unbelievable franchise. This is the hardest series we ever had to play. But we're a resilient team and we did whatever it took."

Players and coaches hugged afterward ? their respect for each other was obvious from the opening tipoff of Game 1 through the final buzzer.

A whisker away from a fifth title two nights earlier, the Spurs couldn't find a way to win it all in what was perhaps the last shot for Tim Duncan, Parker and Manu Ginobili to grab another ring together.

"In my case I still have Game 6 in my head," Ginobili said. "Today we played an OK game, they just made more shots than us. LeBron got hot. Shane (Battier), too. Those things can happen. But being so close and feeling that you are about to grab that trophy, and seeing it vanish is very hard."

They were trying to become the first team to win a Game 7 on the road since Washington beat Seattle in 1978, but those old guys ran out of gas just before the finish.

Fans stood, clapped and danced as the clock ticked down, when every score was answered by another score, each stop followed by a better stop. The Heat pushed their lead to six points a few times midway through the fourth but San Antonio kept coming back.

Duncan had 24 points and 12 rebounds for the Spurs, but missed a shot and follow attempt right under the basket with about 50 seconds left and the Spurs trailing by two.

James followed with a jumper ? the shot the Spurs were daring him to take earlier in the series ? to make it 92-88, sending San Antonio to a timeout as Glenn Frey's "The Heat Is On" blared over the arena's sound system.

He then came up with a steal and made two free throws for a six-point lead, and after Ginobili missed, James stalked toward the sideline, knowing it was over and that he was, once again, the last one standing.

Wade had 23 points and 10 rebounds for the Heat, who overcame a scoreless Chris Bosh by getting six 3-pointers and 18 points from Battier.

"It was a great series and we all felt that," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "I don't know if 'enjoy' is the right word, but in all honesty, even in defeat, I'm starting to enjoy what our group accomplished already, when you look back. And you need to do that, to put it in perspective. So it's no fun to lose, but we lost to a better team.

"And you can live with that as long as you've given your best, and I think we have."

Streamers fell from the arena ceiling onto the fans for the second year in a row, but this one meant so much more. A narrow escape in Game 6 was still fresh in everyone's mind.

They were down 10 in the fourth quarter of that one before James led the charge back, finishing with a triple-double in Miami's 103-100 overtime victory. This one was nearly as tight, neither team leading by more than seven and the game tied 11 times.

Kawhi Leonard had 19 points and 16 rebounds for the Spurs, who had been 4 for 4 in the championship round. Ginobili had 18 points but Parker managed just 10 points on 3-of-12 shooting.

"Just give credit to the Miami Heat. LeBron was unbelievable. Dwyane was great. I just think they found a way to get it done," Duncan said. "We stayed in the game. We gave ourselves opportunities to win the game, we just couldn't turn that corner."

The Heat and coach Erik Spoelstra collected the Larry O'Brien trophy again from Commissioner David Stern, presiding over his last NBA Finals before retiring next February.

He couldn't have asked for a better way to go out.

James avenged his first finals loss, when his Cleveland Cavaliers were swept by the Spurs on 2007. That helped send James on his way to South Florida, realizing it would take more help to win titles that could never come alone.

He said he would appreciate this one more because of how tough it was. The Heat overpowered Oklahoma City in five games last year, a team of 20-something kids who weren't ready to be champions yet.

This came against a respected group of Spurs whose trio has combined for more than 100 playoff victories together and wanted one more in case this was San Antonio's last rodeo.

Duncan is 37 and Ginobili will be a 36-year-old free agent next month, the core of a franchise whose best days may be behind them.

Meanwhile, it's a potential dynasty along Biscayne Bay, but also one with a potentially small window. Wade's latest knee problems are a reminder that though he came into the NBA at the same time as James and Bosh 10 years ago, he's a couple of years older at 31 with wheels that have seen some miles.

James can become a free agent again next summer with another decision ? though hopefully not another "Decision" ? to make. He's comfortable in Miami and close with Wade, and the Heat have the leadership and commitment from owner Micky Arison and president Pat Riley to keep building a championship core around him.

Why would he want to leave?

"This team is amazing," James said. "And the vision that I had when I decided to come here is all coming true."

Notes: Home teams are 15-3 in Game 7s of the NBA Finals. ... Miami improved to 5-3 all-time in Game 7s in the postseason and became the fourth team to win the final two games at home since the finals went to a 2-3-2 format in 1985, joining the Lakers in 1988 and 2010, and Houston Rockets in 1994. ... Green was just 1 for 12, going 1 for 6 behind the arc. He started the series by making 25 3s in the first five games, a finals record for an entire series.

Paul Feig to Direct Female Spy Comedy

paul feig1 Paul Feig To Direct Spy Comedy Susan Cooper

Paul Feig will be continuing his recent trend of directing comedies led by a female cast with Susan Cooper. His 2011 female-led feature, Bridesmaids,?was a mega success, bringing in $288 million. That film will be followed by The Heat later this month. After bridal parties and buddy cops, Feig?s new focus will be on a female spy who is said to be reminiscent of James Bond.

While not much can be said of the plot, Feig will be taking a more realistic approach, unlike other spy comedies such as Austin Powers or Johnny English. Similar to The Heat, two characters will lead the story. The possibility of creating a franchise is also being discussed.

In addition to directing, Feig has provided the script and will be producing. He was supposedly inspired by one of his favorite movies, the 1967 spoof Casino Royale starring Peter Sellers. If the two films have anything in common, Susan Cooper will surely receive divided reviews.

Feig currently has a project in the works with Reese Witherspoon titled?Wish List, and another comedy focused on the relationship between a mother and daughter that was written by Katie Dippold of The Heat. However, he seems to be making more progress with Susan Cooper at the moment and it will likely be his next film.

Women are often ignored and disregarded when it comes to comedy and Feig has been defying that status quo. Movies like Bridesmaids and The Heat, with the assistance of brilliant and fearless female comedic actors like Melissa McCarthy, prove that actresses are capable of portraying more than the clumsy sidekick or the witty best friend. Perhaps Paul Feig will demonstrate this point even further in?Susan Cooper. Judging by his current track record, we see no reason why he won?t.

James Gandolfini leaves behind 2 completed films

NEW YORK (AP) ? James Gandolfini left behind numerous projects in various states of development, including two films that have already completed production.

The 51-year-old actor, who died Wednesday, had been busy, appearing in a flurry of late 2012 releases, including the Osama bin Laden hunt thriller "Zero Dark Thirty," the stylish crime saga "Killing Them Softly" and the 1960s coming-of-age drama "Not Fade Away," which reteamed him with "Sopranos" creator David Chase. Gandolfini continued to gravitate toward character actor roles, several of which will now be released posthumously.

The Brooklyn crime film "Animal Rescue," which was shot this spring, was his final movie. Directed by Michael R. Roskam ("Bullhead") and written by Dennis Lehane, it stars Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace, with Gandolfini playing a bar owner. Fox Searchlight is expected to release it next year.

Gandolfini also co-stars in "Enough Said," a romance from writer-director Nicole Holofcener ("Please Give"). He plays ex-husband to Catherine Keener, who is pursued by another divorcee, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Shot last fall, "Enough Said" is also to be distributed by Fox Searchlight, though there is no release date set.

The "Sopranos" star continued to have close associations with HBO. He had shot a pilot for the network with Steven Zaillian ("A Civil Action") for "Criminal Justice," an adaption of the 2008 BBC series in which he plays a low-rent New York City attorney.

Though HBO initially passed on picking up the show, it was restructured for a more limited miniseries run. No episodes beyond the pilot have been shot, so the series' future is now uncertain.

Gandolfini had also recently signed on to reteam with his "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone" co-star Steve Carell. In "Bone Wars," a film from HBO Films, the two were to play rival 19th-century paleontologists Edward Drinker Cope and Othniel Charles Marsh. That project, though, was only in the early stages of development.

Lawmakers try to save student loan deal

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A handful of senators struggled Thursday to hold together a bipartisan deal to keep student loan rates from doubling on July 1 while their colleagues traded political barbs with little more than a week to go before the deadline.

Top White House officials, meanwhile, told lawmakers they were open to changes in President Barack Obama's student loan proposal if a compromise could be reached that would win congressional approval.

The behind-the-scenes negotiations were an attempt to head off a rate hike that Congress' Joint Economic Committee estimated would cost the average student borrower an extra $2,600. Both parties rushed to microphones to point fingers at the other for the potential hike but kept in touch with back-channel efforts that would prevent them from being blamed for adding to already high college costs.

"There's no question there are discussions going on in the Senate right now, bipartisan discussions. Whether it bares fruit in the next 10 days is going to be a nail biter," said Rep. Joe Courtney, D-Conn.

The bipartisan deal, which would link undergraduate student loans' interest rates with the financial markets, would save the government more than $8 billion over the next 10 years, according to an unpublished Congressional Budget Office report.

Democratic and Republican Senate aides insisted on anonymity in discussing the budget office report because it has not been released to the public yet and they were not authorized to discuss it publicly.

The compromise plan was similar to one Obama included in his budget and House Republicans passed. That put pressure on the Senate, where a competing partisan proposal came up short last week.

The new bipartisan proposal's $8 billion sum was unlikely to win much support from Democrats, who insist that student loans should not be a source of profit for the government. Students loans issued this year were set to bring in $51 billion net gain over the next decade.

The projections, though, could win votes from Republicans who do not want the popular student loan programs to add to the deficit.

The lawmakers who helped craft the deal ? Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Republican Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma and independent Sen. Angus King of Maine ? have not publicly announced the proposal. The Associated Press obtained a copy of the plan and officials stressed that work on it was still underway.

Senate aides involved in the bipartisan negotiations suggested the plan could be revised to make student loans less profitable but still not add to the deficit.

Separately, White House chief of staff Denis McDonough, education adviser Miguel Rodriguez and deputy Domestic Policy Council director James Kvaal met with lawmakers Thursday and told them the White House was open to changing Obama's plan in favor of a compromise that can pass.

For instance, the White House had intended for its student loan proposal to neither raise money for the government nor cost taxpayers more. Democrats worried the White House proposal would, in fact, generate profit. Also, the president's plan did not cap interest rates that Democrats preferred.

With little more than a week before the deadline, lawmakers ratcheted up pressure on Obama to negotiate a deal before he leaves next week for Africa.

"Listen, the president's failed to talk about this issue and he hasn't lifted a finger to push his own party to pass his own proposal," Republican House Speaker John Boehner told reporters at the Capitol. "The time for games is up. I think our kids deserve better. The president and Senate Democrats need to get their act together so that we can prevent these interest rates from doubling on July 1."

Democrats, meanwhile, kept pushing a plan that would extend interest rates on subsidized Stafford loans at 3.4 percent for another two years. It has failed to get the needed votes to clear a procedural threshold in the Democratic-led Senate or make its way out of the education committee in the Republican-led House.

"If we can't get long-term solution, we should get a deal that prevents rates from doubling," said Rep. Karen Bass, D-Calif., continuing her push for that proposal.

Among some Democrats, Obama's proposal remained no more popular than when he included it in his budget.

"His proposal does try to get us out of this box that we're in right now," Courtney said during an interview scheduled to air on Sunday on C-SPAN. "It's a good starting point, in my opinion, but it's not a finished product."
