Obama shields US airlines from EU carbon fees

1 day

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama signed a bill on Tuesday shielding U.S. airlines from paying for each ton of carbon their planes emit flying into and out of Europe, despite a recent move by Europe to suspend its proposed measure for one year.

The carbon fee bill was the first piece of legislation debated on the House floor after Congress returned from recess on November 13, and had been cleared by the Senate in September in a rare unanimous vote.

It directs the U.S. transportation secretary to shield U.S. airlines from Europe's carbon emissions trading scheme (ETS) if he or she deems it necessary.

Lawyers have said the bill is unusual because it would prevent U.S. companies from complying with the laws of another country.

"The Obama administration is firmly committed to reducing harmful carbon pollution from civil aviation both domestically and internationally, but, as we have said on many occasions, the application of the EU ETS to non-EU air carriers is the wrong way to achieve that objective," Clark Stevens, a White House spokesman, said.

He added that the administration is focused on making progress toward a global solution to reduce emissions under the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the U.N. body that deals with aviation issues.

The U.S. airline industry's main lobbying group, Airlines for America, praised Obama and said it, too, favored working through the ICAO to solve the problem. The group estimated that complying with the EU law would have cost U.S. airlines $3.1 billion between now and 2020.

"It never made a bit of sense for European governments to tax our citizens for flying over our own airspace ? and with the passage of this law we've got the tools we need to prevent it from happening and protect American jobs," said Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill, a co-author of the bill.

The House passed the bill despite a November 12 announcement that the European Union would "stop the clock" on enforcing its law for one year.

The European Commission said it would delay the application of its law to give ICAO enough time to craft a global framework to address emissions before the next assembly of all 190 members next autumn.

McCaskill and co-sponsor Republican Senator John Thune said in a statement that their bill had pressured the EU into delaying the enforcement of their cap-and-trade scheme for aviation.

The EU had also been under pressure from China, one of the world's fastest growing markets for aircraft, which had threatened to cancel orders of European Airbus aircraft if the EU did not back down from applying its ETS on all airlines.

One EU official took to the social networking site Twitter to suggest that United States was not making good on suggestions for "greener" policies.

Obama made reference to climate change as one of a trio of issues facing the country in his victory speech after being re-elected on November 6.

"So far the reelected President Obama climate policies look EXACTLY as in first term. Wonder when we'll see the announced change?" Connie Hedegaard, EU Climate Change Commissioner, said in a tweet.

Green groups criticized Obama for signing the anti-ETS law as one of his first post-election acts but said the administration has the opportunity to back a global solution under ICAO.

"The White House now must endorse a global, market-based measure to rein in carbon pollution from aviation," said World Wildlife Fund's Keya Chatterjee.

Teen escapes Forestville house fire that killed family dogs ...

Firefighters remove clothing and other items from a Vellutini Road home destroyed by fire on Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012.

JOHN BURGESS/ PD

Published: Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at 9:42 a.m.
Last Modified: Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at 1:00 p.m.

A 17-year-old awoke to smoke in her Forestville home Tuesday morning and escaped through a bedroom window before a fire destroyed the residence.

The teen, her mother and little sister lost their Vellutini Road home and two family dogs, an older dog the family had had for 12 years and a Bull Mastiff puppy, reported Forestville Fire Chief Max Ming.

The fire chief said there apparently weren't any smoke detectors inside and the teen was lucky she awoke.

?She jumped out her window and called for her dogs,? said Ming.

The teen, Kyah Caster, called for help at 8:43 a.m.

She initially told dispatchers she feared her mother could still be inside but then discovered her mom already had left for work.

A Forestville engine crew arrived at 8:51 a.m. The small, single-story home was engulfed in flames.

The home, off of Martinelli Road, was a few miles up into the hills above the Russian River.

Russian River and Graton firefighters also responded. Multiple fire engines and water trucks crowded the narrow lane, cramming into little driveways and around a fire hydrant near the home.

The fire apparently started in the kitchen. The cause was under investigation but initially it appeared to be accidental, said Ming.

A few things were salvaged from the remains but the residents, Darcy Kotta and her teen and five-year-old daughter lost their home and virtually all of their belongings.

The local Red Cross was called to help.

40 Juta Lisensi Windows 8 Terjual

(debby)

Gazans say "Thank you Iran" after Israel conflagration

GAZA (Reuters) - Gazans offered very public thanks to Iran on Tuesday for helping them in this month's fight against Israel, when Iranian-made missiles were fired out of the Palestinian enclave towards Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

"Thank you Iran", said large billboards on three major road junctions in the Gaza Strip - the first time there has been such public acknowledgement of Iran's role in the arming of Islamic militants in the tiny territory.

The message was written in Arabic, English, Hebrew and Farsi. The posters also depicted the Iranian Fajr 5 rockets that were used for the first time to target Israel's two largest population centers. No one was injured in the attacks.

The billboards were not signed, but a senior official with the militant group Islamic Jihad, Khader Habib, said it was only natural to show gratitude for Iran's role in the conflict.

"Iranian rockets struck at Tel Aviv. They reached out to Jerusalem. Therefore it was our duty to thank those who helped our people," he told Reuters.

"We have distinctive, good relations with Iran and such a relationship will continue as long as Iran supports the Palestinian people and backs up the resistance," he added.

Israel launched an air offensive on November 14 with the stated aim of stopping Gaza militants from firing rockets at its southern towns and cities.

About 170 Palestinians, more than half of them civilians, died in the fighting that ended in a ceasefire last Wednesday. Six Israelis were also killed, four of them civilians.

Israel has always asserted that arch-foe Tehran supplied Gaza with weapons, but until the latest conflict both Iran and Gaza's dominant Islamist group Hamas had side-stepped the issue, acknowledging only financial backing and warm political ties.

During the eight-day conflagration, the Iranian speaker of parliament, Ali Larijani, said Iran was "honored" to have provided Gaza with military aid. Following the ceasefire, Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal thanked Iran for arms and funding.

The public statements appeared aimed at dispelling speculation that the mainly Sunni Muslim Gaza Strip was shutting the door on Shi'ite Iran and turning instead to neighboring Egypt for support and protection.

Israeli analyst Meir Javedanfar said he thought the Iranians would regret telling the world they supplied Hamas with arms.

"Now that such high-ranking officials openly admit to having supplied weapons to groups in Gaza, the job of isolating Iran will be even easier than before," said Javedanfar, an Iranian expert at the Interdisciplinary Center (IDC) in Herzliya.

Israel and many Western countries say Iran is developing nuclear weapons and have imposed increasingly stringent sanctions on the Islamic Republic to get it to halt its uranium enrichment drive. Tehran says its atomic program is peaceful.

Hamas, which has ruled Gaza since 2007, refuses to recognize Israel's right to exist and is shunned as a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.

Hampton Roads' Small Business Saturday | WAVY.com | Hampton ...

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) - Saturday was all about small businesses when Mom and Pop shops hoped to cash in on the holiday buying rush.

Green Life Adventure Sports in Norfolk had some shoppers who wanted to show their small business support.

?It?s nice to be able to come up here,? said Beth Studer. ?It?s five minutes away as opposed to Janaf or someplace like that. We can shop here and keep them open, that?s good.?

On High Street in Portsmouth, the local businesses depend on foot traffic, which was scarce on Saturday.

?More feet on the street, that?s what I was hoping for,? shop owner Kas Liffa told WAVY.com. ?I was hoping more people would come in. We had a few that have been coming in, that?s what I was hoping for.?

Owners hope to see more customers during the rest of the holiday shopping season.

How To Stay Pure Until Marriage - Incite Faith

I?m a virgin.?An?imperfect one.

I?ve made mistakes in my past and mistakes I still think about even now. I wasn?t always pure in my actions and I paid for them. Being a virgin is a choice for me. It?s a choice I?ve upheld since 17. I made a commitment. A vow to myself and?my body?that I wouldn?t give it away to any one unless I was married.

Yes, I?ve been in relationships and there was a lot of pressure in those relationships to??give in?.?It wasn?t the reason we ended our relationship but it started a downward spiral that inevitably ended it. Something always told me to wait.?And I?ve waited.?The ride to here hasn?t been easy. Words like ?prude? and ?uptight? have been spread around over the course of my life. I remember brief conversations with men who I were interested in who told me I would never find a man because I wouldn?t??give it up.?

Words that engraved themselves in my memory, reminding me ?this was a commitment I intended carrying and nothing any one said was going to change it.

Here I am 29,?still?a virgin, and everyday I am learning more about what I want,?don?t?want, and have more questions about sex and marriage than I have in my entire life. Being more intimate with God has helped guide me in understanding my body and?it?s purpose.?It?s a covenant between God and I that shouldn?t be broken.

So, how have I been able to do it? I?ve been asked how and why by people close to me and my response has always changed. And it?s because I?ve changed.?I?m changing now.?God is making all things new everyday and the more I learn who I am, and what I want, I understand why I?m still a virgin.

For me I?ve applied the following in my life to stay pure until marriage:

Create REALISTIC and healthy boundaries in relationships.

In my last official relationship we didn?t have boundaries. He knew I was a virgin and wanted to stay one until marriage. However, because we did ?other things?, his expectations grew and my commitment to remain a virgin was sending mixed signals. I take full responsibility for it and it taught me an important lesson. I made the decision after our relationship was over to create healthy boundaries early on so there is no confusion later. Healthy boundaries for me are: Understanding what makes me comfortable/uncomfortable and knowing what?s appropriate/inappropriate. I realize this can be different for everyone. So, let me clarify.?Kissing is?OKAY.?Hugging and cuddling are?OKAY.?Being affectionate with each other is?OKAY.?These are acceptable for me because I?m naturally an affectionate person and have self-control.

So, what?s?NOT?okay?

That depends on you. Everyone is different. You know your body. You know what you want. So, I am not going to preach to you about what is acceptable and appropriate behavior for?you.?What I will ask though is:?If God was in the room with you, would He approve of the behavior you and your significant other choose to entertain in outside the context of marriage?

Understand sex in the context of marriage.

Honestly, this has been a huge help for me to stay pure before marriage.?Sex in the context of marriage is beautiful.?Maybe it?s the girl in me, but the more I read and learn about sex, the more I want it,?but I want it differently.?I want it with my future husband.?Right now I am reading??Sex God??by Rob Bell and it?s an amazing book that explores this topic. The sexual bond between a man and woman is central to what it means to be married.?And it?s so much deeper than what our culture paints it.?

Respect your body.

Respect the person God made you to be.?Our bodies are His and every piece is beautiful in its creation. It?s sacred. I haven?t always respected my body and I often look back on those moments when I didn?t and I?m disgusted.?Sometimes I?m ashamed.?My flesh has failed several times in my life and it?s a daily struggle. Lust has had a grip so tight over my life and body for as long as I can remember. But I know what I want and I?m not settling for less than that.?Your body,?our bodies, are temples where His spirit dwells and every day I remind myself to sow in the spirit, not the flesh.

?It?s easy to take off your clothes and have sex. People do it all the time. But opening up your soul to someone, letting them into your spirit and thoughts, fears, future, hopes, and dreams, that is being naked. This is why when people sleep together after they?ve just met, they?re raising the chances significantly that the relationship will not survive. Racing ahead of the progression always costs something. Too much too fast rarely endures.?

I want sex,?I crave it, but I want sex with the man God has chosen for me. If that makes me a prude, so be it. I?m not in this world to please any one and neither are you. Each and everyone of you know your body and inevitably what you want. We have desires. ?And it?s okay. ?It?s normal.

God gave us our desires, but make sure your desire to pursue Him isn?t placed on the back burner for momentary pleasure.?

?Your strength is a beautiful thing. And when you live in it, when you carry yourself with the honor and dignity that are yours, it forces the men around you to relate to you on more than just a flesh level. You are worth dying for.

If you?re a virgin, what has been the hardest struggle for you?

If you?re married, how did your perspective about sex change after marriage?

Price and buyer trends lead to upswing in Johor Bahru condo market

The condo market in Johor Bahru has grown in recent times as demand from buyers has increased.

The rapid development of condominiums and apartments in Johor Bahru is based upon the increase in land prices and changing trends of buyers in the region, the Malaysia Chronicle reported.

Chairman of Real Estate and Housing Developers? Association (Rehda) Johor Branch, Koh Moo Hing said the young generation is now more interested to live in condominiums and apartments due to trend and security factors.

?Property buyers, particularly amongst the young generation now choose the gated and guarded concept such as condominiums and apartments as they place more importance on the security factor,? Koh said.

He added property development companies in Johor Bahru were not really interested to build condominiums and apartments in the past and use to focus on terraced houses and bungalows.

The scenario has changed over the last few years with developers racing to build condominiums and apartments in this city following high demand from buyers, Koh said.

SP Setia Bhd launched a 55-storey high-end condominium, the tallest in Iskandar Malaysia, known as Sky 88, which is expected for completion within four years, the newspaper reported.

Other developers following suit include Kumpulan JoLand?s ne development the Paragon Residences@Straits View comprising 32-storey and Dijaya?s Tropez Residences at Danga Bay.

Both Paragon Residences and Tropez Residences are fronting the Johor Straits, which is very popular amongst the foreign buyers. Locations considered as hot spots include Danga Bay, Nusajaya and Medini.

According to the Johor Bahru City Council and Johor Bahru Tengah Municipal Council, there are more than 25,000 condominium and apartment units in the city that are under construction or in the process of getting building approvals.

Company plans to set up review board, but researchers want it to keep its promise

The latest correspondence is posted online today as part of the BMJ's open data campaign, aimed at persuading Roche to honour the promise it made almost three years ago to make key Tamiflu trial data available for independent scrutiny.

Last week, Donald MacLean, Life Cycle Leader for Tamiflu, wrote to Professor Chris Del Mar in his capacity as coordinating editor of the Cochrane Acute Respiratory Infections Group, concerning "our debate on Tamiflu data."

The Cochrane researchers say they object to Roche's suggestion that there is a debate on Tamiflu data. "There is no debate nor can there be any debate about the data whilst you do not honour your promise," they say. "The only reason we keep asking Roche to keep its promise, rather than simply getting the data from the European Medicines Agency directly, is because Roche has not supplied all of the data to the European regulator."

Roche's letter also mentions "disagreements" over the type of analyses the Cochrane team wish to do, but the researchers point out that their methods and analyses have been public for nearly two years and "follow Cochrane procedure" and state that they are not aware of any specific concerns from Roche.

Roche's letter goes on to say that, in order to reach "an amicable resolution" Roche plans to set up "a multi-party advisory board to review the totality of Tamiflu data" . which they believe is "a sensible, fair and transparent way of addressing this public debate."

But the Cochrane team argue that Roche's offer is merely a belated attempt at turning the clock back, and call on the company to expand its data sharing pledges "to become compatible with current regulatory norms."

They say: "The European Medicines Agency and the EU Ombudsman have made abundantly clear that there is no reason for anonymised clinical data to be withheld from public scrutiny once a marketing authorisation has been obtained for a pharmaceutical. Why should Roche not - at the minimum - meet this standard?"

In summary, they say, "we ask to you to honour your promise of three years ago and make public full clinical study reports in your possession."

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) ? At least 112 people were killed in a fire that raced through a multi-story garment factory just outside of Bangladesh's capital, an official said Sunday.

The blaze broke out at the seven-story factory operated by Tazreen Fashions late Saturday. By Sunday morning, firefighters had recovered 100 bodies, fire department Operations Director Maj. Mohammad Mahbub told The Associated Press.

He said another 12 people who had suffered injuries after jumping from the building to escape the fire later died at hospitals. The death toll could rise as the search for victims was continuing, he said.

Local media reported that up to 124 people were killed in the fire. The cause of the blaze was not immediately clear, and authorities have ordered an investigation.

Bangladesh has some 4,000 garment factories, many without proper safety measures. The country annually earns about $20 billion from exports of garment products, mainly to the United States and Europe.

Relatives of the factory workers were frantically looking for their loved ones. Sabina Yasmine said she saw the body of her daughter-in-law, who died in the fire, but had no trace of her son, who also worked at the factory.

"Oh, Allah, where's my soul? Where's my son?" wailed Yasmine, who works at another factory in the area. "I want the factory owner to be hanged. For him, many have died, many have gone."

Mahbub said firefighters recovered 69 bodies from the second floor of the factory alone. He said most of the victims had been trapped inside the factory, located just outside of Dhaka, with no emergency exits leading outside the building.

Many workers who had taken shelter on the roof of the factory were rescued, but firefighters were unable to save those who were trapped inside, Mahbub said.

He said the fire broke out on the ground floor, which was used as a warehouse, and spread quickly to the upper floors.

"The factory had three staircases, and all of them were down through the ground floor," Mahbub said. "So the workers could not come out when the fire engulfed the building."

"Had there been at least one emergency exit through outside the factory, the casualties would have been much lower," he said.

Many of the victims were burned beyond recognition. The recovered bodies were kept in rows on the premise of a nearby school.

Army soldiers and paramilitary border guards were deployed to help police keep the situation under control as thousands of onlookers and anxious relatives of the factory workers gathered at the scene, Mahbub said. He would not say how many people were still missing.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed shock at the loss of so many lives in the blaze and asked authorities to conduct thorough search-and-rescue operations.

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association said it would stand by the victims' families.

Bangladesh's garment factories make clothes for brands including Wal-Mart, JC Penney, H&M, Marks & Spencer, Carrefour and Tesco.

Separately, a flyover under construction fell onto a busy market, leaving at least 14 people dead including three construction workers in southeastern city of Chittagong, an official said Sunday.

Local fire official Abdul Mannan said the concrete structure collapsed on Saturday night, and authorities recovered the bodies by Sunday morning from under the debris in the second-largest city after Dhaka.

If the damaged area is relatively unobtrusive, such as under the arm, where a lot of wear occurs, your repairs won be on show for close scrutiny anyway. If your item has a hole or has already been patched, the best alternative may be to simply cover up the area. Consider an appliqu?patch on shoulders or front panels, for example. If you pick the patch carefully, you can sometimes make it look as though it was part of the original design. Or, if the damage is lower down on the front, you could add a patch pocket or two in fabric or lace, or even knit a patch yourself in a contrasting or coordinating colour, to create a truly unique, yet still vintage piece. With a worn hem, collars, or cuffs, lace may again be your saving grace. A narrow lace edging stitched through the existing knitwear, and backed with
