How to Recognize Eating Disorders - About Fitness and Exercises

As human beings, we must have a healthy relationship with our foods. Being the sources of important nutrients, foods must be taken by the body regularly. However, too much or less than what our body needs may be detrimental to our health.

If you have unhealthy dealings with the foods you eat, then you must have an eating disorder. Terms like anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating may sound over the top but you might not know that you are slowly developing it already.

With that being said, this article aims at helping you to recognize if you (or someone you know) are suffering or likely to have an eating disorder. Learn to recognize the symptoms of eating disorders so that you can seek professional help as soon as possible.

1. Look for signs of drastic changes. You should see if something has changed in the person. If you are mother, notice if your child has a sudden weight loss or weight gain. In addition, if you see that there are changes in the way he/she eats (such as overeating, refusal to eat, or constant mentioning of caloric intake) then there is a great possibility that he/she might be having a disorder.

2. You must not be startled immediately by your discovery. The fact that eating behavior changes does not necessarily mean that one is suffering from an eating disorder. You need to study the behavior properly. This may be hard especially for teens since there is commonly no communication. However, you should do your best to observe. If your kid is constantly talking about feeling of being fat, or current use laxatives, or showing strong dislike about eating, or showing signs of forced vomiting he/she may have an eating disorder.

3. Talk to them. Narrate to them what you have noticed about them lately. Ask questions why they feel indifferent about their body and about their view towards eating. If there will be signs of denial then they are really suffering from a disorder. If the conversation leads to an argument, hold your temper and explain in a nice way.

4. Look for tangible and visual signs. People suffering from eating disorders are usually having poor health as well. Dental health deterioration is one sign that is usually common among bulimic people. In addition, stringy and brittle hair is also a sign of an eating disorder.
